ere’s a stunning restaurant which plumbs new depths – by serving diners under water.The luxury eatery called Under, is to be built at the southernmost point of the Norwegian coastline by the village of Båly.It will be Europe’s very first underwater restaurant. The construction is scheduled to start in February 2018, with completion estimated for February/March 2019.The building will also function as a research centre for marine life and is described as a tribute to the Norwegian coast and to Lindesnes – to the wild fauna of the sea and to the rocky coastline of Norway’s southern tip. It is half-sunken into the sea, with the building’s monolithic upper form appearing to break the water surface on the craggy shoreline. A spokesman for Oslo-based architects Snøhetta said:”More than an aquarium, the structure will become a part of its marine environment, coming to rest directly on the sea bed five meters below the water’s surface. “The restaurant will have metre-thick concrete walls to withstand pressure and shock from the rugged sea conditions. Customers will be able to look out of the restaurant’s massive acrylic windows offer a view of the seabed as it changes throughout the seasons and varying weather conditions. The designers hope the building will weather and blend in over time and have given it a coarse surface that invites mussels to cling on. The company said that over time, as the mollusc community increases the submerged monolith will become an artificial mussel reef that functions dually to rinse the sea and naturally attract more marine life to its purified waters.
